Pregnancy Updates: 22 Weeks

How far along? 22 weeks

Total weight gain/loss:  I haven't weighed in.  I prefer to live in a world of denial.

Maternity Clothes: It's a mix between regular clothing and maternity at this point.  I'm wearing more maternity tops mostly for the added length, but my pants still button.  I bought some over-sized, flow-y cardigans for the fall too.

Sleep: My pregnancy charlie horses have returned.  Good God, why?!

Best Moments this Week: Story Land for sure!  Also, Madeline also likes to pet my belly now, and she keeps handing me her dolls and insisting they are the baby.  She urges me through the motions of feeding the baby, rocking the baby, and changing diapers.  She says in a high-pitched, soothing voice, "It's okay, baby.  It's alright..." while stroking its head.

Movement:  In typical baby fashion, this child is a night owl.  I spend all day worrying about not feeling movement, and then after dinner she tries to burst from my womb.

Food Cravings:  Nothing in particular.  I've been eating a lot of BLTs for lunch...with added avocado.  What is that called?  A BLAT?

Food Aversions:  Never.

Gender:  It's still a girl!  (One hopes.)

Labor Signs:  No.  Do not open till Christmas.

Pregnancy Symptoms:  My bladder has betrayed me.  I have some noticeable stretch marks in undesirable places.  Increased heartburn and flatulence.  Pregnancy is beautiful.

Belly Button In or Out? Flat.

What I Miss:  Alcohol.  Last night we went out for Eric's birthday dinner, and I wanted to drink all the martinis.  A celebration just isn't as celebratory when 100% sober.

What I am Looking Forward to:  I ordered a new rug for the girls' room that should be arriving today!

Upcoming Appointments/ Events:  Back to school on Monday!

Current Food Comparison?  Spaghetti squash.  (I don't care what any of you all say, it does not take the place of pasta.)

Meanwhile, I'm the size of:

How to Alienate Pregnant People

My love for Dunkin Donuts is such that Madeline was almost born in one.  Okay, not really, but my water did break while waiting in line for a morning bagel.  I know.  It's gross.  Get over it.

So imagine my disappointment when Eric came back to our car with only one pink and orange bag the other morning instead of the four I was expecting.

"I couldn't get your donuts or Madeline's bagel because they ran out," he explained quickly lest I eat him.

Um, what?!  I'm sorry, but the name is Dunkin DONUTS.  What was I supposed to dunk in my coffee instead?   Low fat blueberry muffins?  Egg sandwiches?  I think not, Dunkin Donuts.  I think not.

All I know is there must have been a lot of cranky customers on Monday morning, but none as cranky as the hungry pregnant lady.

Luckily, there is a rule in Massachusetts that states that one can not drive for more than five minutes in any direction without encountering a new Dunkin Donuts.  We're extra lucky because the next Dunks was only two minutes away instead of five.  That's why we pay so much in taxes.  Of course, our town also has a rule against drive-thrus...but that's a whole separate pregnancy rant.

At our second stop, Eric came out of the store with two new bags and flashed me a solid thumbs-up.  Success.

So listen, Dunks, you are lucky that you have started offering the French crullers again in this area because that was a dirty trick to play on me.  And although your crullers are so soggily delicious, I just don't think I could handle a betrayal like that again.

That was low, man.  Way low.

P.S.  Happy birthday to my sweet husband who puts up with a lot.

Story Land

When you have a kid, you find yourself reliving a lot of your own childhood.  And since I often feel like a five-year-old at heart, this may be my favorite part of parenting.

We took an impromptu trip to Story Land yesterday, which I have fond memories of visiting as a child.  Although the last time I remember going there, my now twenty-five-year-old nephew was a baby, so it's been a very long time.

For those of you outside of this area, Story Land is a nursery-rhyme-themed amusement park located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire that is geared toward young children.

I've wanted to take Madeline all summer, but it's a three hour drive from our house, so we kept putting it off.  Then, we realized that Monday was our last day of freedom together as a family since Eric starts marching band stuff this week, and I go back to work next week.  (Lame.)  On Sunday night we spontaneously decided to just do it, got up and out the door by 7 am on Monday, and headed toward the mountains.

It's funny how memories work.  I'm not sure if I actually remember visiting Story Land as a child, or if it's just that I've seen the old photographs so many times that it still looks familiar.  Regardless, the front part of the park has not changed in decades.

When guests first enter, a path wanders through an area of miniature houses and characters from Mother Goose's nursery rhymes.  Madeline saw the little houses peeking over the fence before we even entered, and exclaimed, "I want to go on that!  I want to go there!  Can we go on that?"  Madeline is the perfect age and size to be wowed by little houses.

Though she still may be a little short for some things...

We wandered through Mary Quite Contrary's house, the Old Woman's Shoe, Peter-Peter Pumpkin Eater's giant pumpkin, and the cottage of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  Madeline liked lying in Baby Bear's bed the best, and she probably ran up and down the stairs of their tiny cottage at least three times.

From there, we rounded the corner to Alice's Tea Cup ride.  Madeline loves the Disney version of Alice and Wonderland, so I thought she'd be really excited to see the images of Alice, but she was kinda "meh" about that part.  She did ride the tea cups with Eric though, and loved it.  Pregnant women were not allowed.  Womp, womp.

There's also a section of barnyard animals designed to look like stories such as The Three Little Pigs or The Billy Goats Gruff.  Madeline was not interested in any of the animals except for the pigs.  Pink, curly tails do it every time.

After winding through the nursery rhyme section of the amusement park, guests enter through large castle gates into a fairy tale land featuring Cinderella.

A motorized pumpkin coach will bring guests up a steep hill to Cinderella's castle.  Several times throughout the day, Cinderella sits on her throne to greet guests.  The line for the coach was a little long, but we knew Madeline would love it.

As we waited to board, who should exit the coach right in front of us?  Cinderella herself!   It seems the princess was headed to her lunch break, which means we missed seeing her in the castle.  We didn't mind though because Madeline was pretty star struck to see a real life princess standing in front of her.  Later she kept saying, "She was so, so beautiful."  I think the surprise of seeing Cinderella get out of the pumpkin made the whole experience more magical for Madeline.

Look how happy she is riding in the pumpkin...

Even though Cinderella was out, Madeline still got to explore her throne room complete with a glass slipper.   She enjoyed sitting on the seat of honor.  She said, "I looked like a queen!"

After the excitement of the pumpkin, we needed a little rest.  We got lunch from one of the concession stands, found a little picnic table in the shade, and munched quietly while scoping out the rides ahead.

Madeline decided she had to go on the carousel first thing after lunch, and luckily, pregnant women are allowed on that tame ride.  She even rode a horse instead of just sitting on the bench like she usually does.

The rest of the park is filled with rides themed after different areas of the world, which is probably more exciting for older kids than the nursery rhyme sections.

Eric brought Madeline on a roller coaster.  It was pretty small, but big enough to make Mumma nervous while waiting for their turn.  I wasn't sad that pregnant women weren't allowed on this ride.  I even sent Eric a text that read, "Hold on to my baby tightly!" followed by, "Seriously."

That's them in the back!
Of course, Madeline wasn't afraid at all.  Eric said she laughed and screamed the entire way down.  Yikes, Maddie Bear.

And she loved these flying shoes that she could make go up and down by herself.  Nothing makes me smile as much as seeing Eric in a giant, flying shoe.

For relief from hot days, there are several water rides.  We almost opted to go on a ride featuring water cannons before Madeline decided getting squirted with cold water was not her thing.  All in all, we managed to stay dry though there were lots of little kids wandering around in bathing suits.  Smart.

When we made it back to the main entrance, we hopped on the little train that winds around the park to get one last view of everything.  All three of us were pretty beat, so even though there were many rides we missed and face-painting opportunities to be had, we decided to start on the long drive home.

It took us 2.5 hours to get there, and we spent four hours wandering the park.  We figured we had put in enough time to make the trip worth it.

I'm so glad we went.  We had a beautiful day.  It wasn't too hot, and there was a cool breeze.  A woman waiting in line with me complained about the amount of people, but I didn't think the crowds were bad at all.  I tend to get short-tempered and cranky when I feel crowded, but I never got the feeling that we had to fight for space or elbow other parents to get our kid on a ride.  (Not that I'd do such a thing.)  It helped that we visited on a Monday morning.  I'm sure on weekends it can get very busy.

Most importantly, Madeline loved it.  She talked about it all night.  I think Cinderella was the highlight, but she also liked going on rides with Dada.  She was sad that we missed the hot air balloon ride the she spied in the distance, but I told her we'd go on that next time.

It's safe to say that we'll probably be back again next season...this time with baby sister strapped to our backs.  Perhaps we'll even stay in the area since there are about two hundred hotels and a thousand things to do in North Conway.

And so the family tradition of Story Land visits continues!

Pregnancy Updates: 21 Weeks

How far along? 21 weeks

Total weight gain/loss:  Not sure, but based on the amount of cheesecake I ate last night, I'd say at least a pound up from last week.

Maternity Clothes: I'm still wearing most of my regular wardrobe, but I dusted off the box of maternity clothing under my bed this week.  Since I have to look presentable when I return to work, I should probably take inventory of what I've got.

Sleep: I slept well this week.  No middle of the night rounds of Candy Crush.

Best Moments this Week: Going to Portland with my family.  Painting the girls' room a pale shade of pink.  I LOVE it.

Movement:  Baby is getting stronger.  She's pretty quiet most of the day, but I usually feel can feel her bopping around when we're hanging out on the couch at night.

Food Cravings:  I ate the pineapple coconut cake, and it was everything I remembered it to be.  Yum!  I've continued to want sweets most nights...hence the cheesecake.

Food Aversions:  Nah.

Gender:  It's a girl!!!

Labor Signs:  No!

Pregnancy Symptoms:  The soreness wasn't as bad this week.  There haven't been many symptoms other than the fact that I now walk slower than the teenagers and elderly at the mall.

Belly Button In or Out? Still in.

What I Miss:  Shopping for cute clothes rather than convenient clothes.

What I am Looking Forward to:  Getting the rest of the nursery taken care of.

Upcoming Appointments/ Events:  Back to school in about a week and a half.  Boo.

Current Food Comparison?  A carrot.

Meanwhile, I'm the size of:

If there's only a carrot in there, how come it looks like I swallowed a turnip?

If you'd like a comparison of what life was like at 21 weeks last time, here it is!

Dear Madeline: August, 2013

Dear Madeline,

You have exactly one month of being two left.  How incredible is that?

I feel like I'm grasping at air trying to hold on to each moment with you.  Too soon you will no longer be my little baby.  You will no longer want to hug, cuddle, and hold my hand every moment of the day.  You won't need me to put you to bed at night, or to help you on the potty, or to wash behind your ears. So, as trying as it can sometimes be to hold your hand through every meltdown, potty accident, or stubborn refusal to wear shoes in the market, I'm trying to remember to appreciate this time while it lasts.

Besides, there's only a few months left of just our little family of three.   Now, it's so easy for me to drop everything to hold you when you need to be held.  I worry that it's going to come as quite a slap in the face when I have another little baby in my arms who may need me a little more urgently.  We try to prepare you for this fact the best that we can.

Yet, while it took you a week or two to get used to the idea, you've warmed nicely to the idea of a little sister.  You're so sweet talking about, "our baby."  "Mumma, our baby will cry."  "Mumma, our baby will wear clothes."  "Mumma, you have to rock our baby."

Yesterday, you rubbed my belly with a frown and said, "Mumma, our baby is crying."  I assured you that she will have plenty of time to cry later, and that right now she's happily sleeping in my belly.

You talk about playing games with her.  You will play Little People and princess with her, but will not share Olaf.  You picked your "sister baby" a flower while we walked around town the other morning.  I nearly melted when you handed it to me.

Meanwhile, as we near the end of year two, I can honestly say that you haven't been terrible at all.  For the majority of your life you have been a sweet and easy child.  People keep telling me to wait, that three is age where the real problems begin.

This may be true, as your stubbornness seems to only increase with age.  You have had a very difficult time listening to Mumma and Dada recently.  Dada has even lost his patience with you a few times, and that's a difficult feat to accomplish.

We had to give you a stern talking to at the grocery store this morning after you poked your fingers through the wrapping on our raw meat after we repeatedly told you not to touch it.  Gross.  You cried crocodile tears the entire time we stood in line.  Two elderly ladies standing behind us smiled at your dramatic attempts, while Dada and I did our best to ignore you.

You boo-hoo-hoo-ed until you noticed a package of M&Ms beside you.  Suddenly, all your tears were dry, and you slyly asked, "Are those M&Ms for me?" while flashing your cutest grin.  The ladies behind us burst into laughter.

"Amazing how fast that came to an end," one lady commented.

The problem is that you have learned to work your cute to your advantage.  You did not get the M&Ms, but since candy was buy-one-get-one, and I really wanted a Kit Kat, I may have stuffed one in my purse for later when you weren't looking.

We've got under two weeks of vacation left, little one.  Soon, you'll be back to the daily preschool grind, while Mumma and Dada get back to work.  Then before we know it, there will be snow on the ground, Christmas carols being sung, and a new little baby to rock your little world.

Enjoy being the center of attention while you can, Maddie Bear.  I don't mind too much.

Love,
Mumma

Anniversary Get Away

Eric and I celebrated our first year of wedded bliss with a mini trip to Portland, Maine.  Of course, we took the Maddie Bear along too because a vacation just would not be a vacation without a Madeline and Olaf following along.  Obviously.

We could have easily driven to Portland, but I thought it would be more fun and adventurous to take the train, and it was.

We spent most of the ride up looking out the window for Sasquatches, moose, and Olaf's bear friends.  Unfortunately, we did not see any of those things.  Bummer.

"Look, Olaf, it's your bear friends."
We spent the afternoon exploring Portland's Old Port and Waterfront districts.

I dont' know why the Berlin Wall is there...but hey.

It's good to have goals.

Expressions of everlasting love...awe.

I ate the best seafood chowder ever at Gilbert's Chowder House, Madeline whined about walking/the sun/lobsters/holding hands, and Eric reminded me that soon he would have three whiny girls to love instead of just two.  Luckily, we got to check into the hotel early, because after so much excitement, Madeline needed an afternoon nap.

After some much needed rest, and a bag of M&Ms, Madeline was in much better spirits, so we continued to explore.  We walked along the Eastern Promenade to get a good view of the harbor.  It was a beautiful day...sunny but breezy.

Poor Madeline has an unholy fear of lobsters.  I guess you can't blame her.  They are pretty ugly.  She doesn't like to see them or even think about them.  When she pretends to make us food in the kitchen, she won't let us order even pretend lobster.

So, it's a good thing that Maine is the Lobster Kingdom of the United States.  They snuck up on her everywhere.  Lobster statues, lobster paintings, lobster t-shirts, lobster stuffed animals, lobster hats, lobster dinners...the list is really endless.

Meanwhile, we fed her lobster mac n' cheese for dinner without making it clear that she was eating lobster.  We're mean parents, but she ate it without complaint.
We also didn't tell her that there was a giant lobster standing behind her.  When she realized where she was standing, she ran away yelling, "I don't want to SEE it!"
By the time we made it back to the hotel, she was a bit overtired, so getting to bed was a battle.  Still, something had to give eventually, and the three of us finally slept like peaceful lobsters on the bottom of the sea.
Madeline saw this photograph and asked me to, "Take my picture with the kitty."

On day two, we took the Down East Duck Tour.  Madeline had spied the amphibious vehicle the day before and expressed an urgent need to go on it.

Eric and I realized we should have taken the tour on our first day because the city was a lot bigger than we realized.  There was a lot more to see and do.

Meanwhile, Madeline loved peeking over the edge of the vehicle to see everything on the streets below.  She wasn't too crazy about driving into the water.  She curled up in my lap and tried to go to sleep for most of that part of the tour, but Eric and I enjoyed seeing the harbor up close.

We spent the rest of the afternoon window shopping, eating lunch, and wandering some more before hopping back on the train toward Boston.

Madeline and Olaf were clean tuckered out...they slept the entire ride home.

Portland was a great little city.  Eric decided he'd like to go back some day when I'm not pregnant so we can drink and eat our way through the place.  Don't mind if I do.

Thanks for a nice getaway, and a wonderful first year of marriage, Eric. Love.

Conversations with Maddie Bear: Rotten Child Edition

Madeline: (Pointing at the rather busty chest of a princess in her bedtime story) Why do girls have those?
Me: Umm...to help them feed their babies.
Madeline: Oh.
(We continue reading.)
Madeline: (Interrupting a few minutes later) But I don't have them!
Me: You will when you grow up.
Madeline: Yeah.

Madeline: Mumma? Is that your chest?
Me: Yes...
Madeline: Wow, they're really big!
(First and last time I will ever hear those words directed at my chest area.)

Madeline. You 're a fuck-fuck Mumma!
Me: Um, what did you just say?!
Madeline: You're a fuck-fuck.
Me: Hey, don't say that.
Madeline: (giggling) Fuck-fuck.
Me: Madeline, if you say that again, you're going to time out.
Madeline: (silence)

Madeline: I want some cheese.
Me: Cheese for breakfast?
Madeline: I want some.
Me: No. No cheese for breakfast.
Madeline: I just want some. I love cheese! I want some cheeeeese. I want cheeeese. Cheeeeeeeese. Gimme cheeeeese!

Me: Maddie come here, I want to put pants on you.
Madeline: No, I don't want to wear pants!! (Runs from room hysterically crying.)

Maddie: (Holding out a flower) I picked this for my sister baby.

That last one totally makes amends for calling me a fuck-fuck.
